Introducing Universal Storage, from VAST.
innovation to break 30 years of price vs. performance tradeoffs.
Data Center Complexity
The world of data storage is complex when you look at it through the lens of a customer. Organizations manage a wide variety of systems and expend their energy moving data around the complex storage hierarchy, while applications suffer when the data they need is constrained on slow archive storage systems.

Cloud services available today have not re-thought the data storage hierarchy or any data storage concepts. Rather, they've repackaged conventional concepts and offered them up as a service to customers. A service delivery of the same complexity customers have dealt with for decades.

For today's modern, data-driven applications such as big data, machine learning and deep learning, the more data you feed them, the more effective they become. Tiering your data from Flash to Archive means that data is inaccessible by your applications, which results in no opportunities to learn.
Storage Compromises
DECADES OF TRADEOFFS.
ALL CREATED BY SPINNING MEDIA.
While the hard drive may seem like a cost-effective way to store your data, there are constant challenges around how performance and capacity evolve. The Hard Drive tends to operate at a constant rate – even though it gets larger and larger on an annual basis. In essence, the per-bit performance goes down as drives get larger and larger.
Every year, the gap between HDD performance and capacity just grows and grows… a problem that silicon storage, aka flash, was designed to eliminate.
FLASH BREAKS THIS
FUNDAMENTAL TRADEOFF.
Enterprises use new flash technologies to break the long-standing tradeoff between performance and capacity that is found with HDDs… as SSD capacity grows, performance grows with it linearly. On the other hand, while flash has broken the long standing tradeoff… enterprise flash systems have not kept pace with innovations in the flash market, forcing customers to continue to compromise.
Because enterprise flash systems have historically cost so much more than HDD-based storage, customers have limited its use to only their most valuable data. The primary question we at VAST asked ourselves is … “what can be done to democratize flash storage infrastructure for all data?”
